Boys Varsity Football · Football Wins Region Title

Daniel football had a night to remember on Friday night. They won the region championship, capped off an undefeated regular season, and earned home-field advantage up to the Upper State Championship. Daniel survived a potential comeback bid by BHP and held on to win 31-28. Daniel received the opening kick, marched down the field and eventually, Tyler Venables hit Javares Hamilton for a 9-yard touchdown putting the Lions up 7-0. The defenses time on the field was short-lived as Logan Lasher picked off the BHP quarterback and took it back to the 6-yard line. Daniel settled for a field goal and ended the first quarter up 10-7. Daniel lead 17-7 at the half. Daniel recovered the kickoff after BHP muffed the kick. Brenton Benson scored on a 6-yard touchdown reception putting the Lions up 24-7 early in the third. BHP and Daniel then traded off touchdowns for the rest of the third quarter, ultimately Daniel headed to the fourth quarter with a 31-21 lead. BHP scored early in the fourth to make it a 3 point game with nine minutes to go. As the Daniel offense struggled in the fourth quarter, the defense came up big as they had a big fourth-down stop with seven minutes remaining. The offense stalled again and the Lions punted with about five minutes remaining. BHP moved the ball effectively down the field, including multiple third and fourth down conversions. BHP had the ball inside the red zone with under two minutes remaining, but Jared Kirksey and Jaheim Lawson finally got enough pressure on the quarterback and forced an intentional grounding penalty, pushing the Bears out of a potential game-tying field goal range. BHP’s hail mary attempt was batted down, and the Lions escaped with a victory and as region champions. Daniel’s first playoff game is at home, this Friday vs. Lancaster. Kickoff is 7:30. Lancaster is 2-8 on the season. The winner of Daniel vs. Lancaster will face the winner of Eastside vs. Westwood. Athletic Passes will NOT be accepted, only SCHSL passes, tickets are $8.
